Quick answers to what most customers ask before ordering a hooklift.
Do I need a CDL to operate a SwapLoader hooklift?
Depends on the truck. If your truck's GVWR is 26,000 lbs or under, you don't need a CDL — that's our Non-CDL models (SL-75, SL-105, SL-110, SL-112, SL-160) and the ST-1614 hooklift trailer. If your truck is over 26,000 lbs, you need a CDL — that's our larger models like the SL-214 and up. The ST-1614 trailer is a great way to get into the dumpster business without dealing with CDL drivers.
Which SwapLoader is the most popular?
The SL-214 — by a long shot. It's a 20,000 lb capacity workhorse that fits Class 6 and 7 trucks (F-650, F-750, Freightliner M2, etc.) and handles most dumpster applications. We usually keep one in stock at our Jacksonville shop ready to install. It's the right call for most haulers starting out.
How long does a hooklift install take?
Plan on about 1-2 weeks once we have your truck. Hooklift installs are more involved than service bodies — we have to install the hoist, hydraulic system, electrical controls, and do all the chassis prep. We'll give you an exact timeline when we look at your truck.
What's the ST-1614 hooklift trailer all about?
It's a game-changer if you want to get into the dumpster business without buying a full truck. The ST-1614 is a hooklift trailer — it bolts onto a gooseneck hitch on your pickup. No CDL needed, no truck-mounted hydraulics, no PTO. Battery-powered with tandem 10,000 lb axles. Way cheaper than a full truck-mounted setup. We can install one on most pickups.
Can you sell us dumpsters too?
Yes — we source dumpster containers in all standard sizes (10, 15, 20, 30, 40 yard plus specialty boxes like recycling and debris). When you order your hooklift, just let us know how many containers and what sizes — we'll include them in the quote.
What's the difference between PTO and Electric over Hydraulic?
PTO Hydraulic runs off your truck's transmission — strong and reliable, standard on bigger CDL trucks. Electric over Hydraulic uses a 12V DC pump to run the hydraulics — better for non-CDL trucks where PTOs aren't always available. Both work great. We'll recommend the right one based on your truck and how often you'll use it.
Do you service and repair hooklifts after install?
Yes — we're a full-service SwapLoader dealer. If something breaks years down the road, bring it back. Hydraulic leaks, electrical issues, hook problems, control issues — we've seen it all.
Prefer to talk it through?
