Frequently Asked Questions.
Quick answers to what most customers ask before ordering a flatbed.
What's the difference between a flatbed and a stake body?
A flatbed is just a flat platform — no sides, no racks. A stake body is a flatbed with removable side racks. If you're always hauling stuff that doesn't need containment (lumber, pallets, equipment, vehicles), a flatbed is simpler and lighter. If you ever need to contain loose materials, go with a stake body instead.
How long of a flatbed do I need?
Depends on what you haul and your chassis. Standard pickup-mount flatbeds are usually 8-9 feet. Class 4-5 trucks (F-450, F-550) typically get 11-16 ft. Class 6-7 trucks can handle 18-24 ft. We make flatbeds up to 28 ft for the right chassis. Tell us your truck and what you're hauling and we'll spec it right.
Standard duty, heavy duty, or extra heavy duty?
Standard duty handles typical loads — pallets, equipment, lumber, materials. Heavy duty (rated for higher loads per square foot) is for hauling concentrated weight like steel coils, machinery, generators. Extra heavy duty is industrial-grade for the toughest loads. Be honest about what you're hauling and we'll match the right build.
Can I add a dump hoist to a flatbed?
Yes — we call it a tilting or dumping flatbed. We install a hydraulic hoist underneath so the whole platform tilts to dump loose materials. Great if you sometimes haul pallets and sometimes haul mulch or gravel. Tell us during the quote and we'll spec it out.
What hitches can you install on a flatbed?
Pintle hooks (most common for commercial towing), ball hitches, gooseneck hitches, and 5th wheel hitches — up to 30,000 lb capacity. We weld them in and wire them up clean.
What about stake pockets and tie-downs?
Pretty much standard equipment on a good flatbed. We can install internal pockets (built into the side rails), external pockets (welded to the outside), or both. Plus D-rings, recessed tie-downs, and E-track for cargo restraint. Tell us how you load and we'll set it up right.
Do you source specific flatbed brands?
If you want a specific brand, we can usually source it. But honestly — our in-house flatbeds are built to commercial-grade specs and often save you money over name brands. Tell us what you're looking for and we'll quote both options if that helps.
